Bridging Minimalism – Unifying Two Homes into One
This interior design project involved the transformation of two adjoining apartments—one a compact 450 sq.ft. 1BHK and the other a 750 sq.ft. 2BHK—into a spacious and unified 1200 sq.ft. 3.5BHK residence. The goal was to reimagine the combined layout to create a contemporary home that felt open, minimal, and highly functional, all while respecting the constraints of a tight budget and the challenges of working within a 50-year-old building.
The central design idea was to use the living room as a bridge—not only physically linking the two formerly separate units, but also serving as the spatial and emotional heart of the home. This newly created central zone combined the living and dining areas into one cohesive, open-plan space that allowed for natural light and cross-ventilation, promoting a sense of openness and ease. Selective demolition of internal walls helped unlock sightlines and flow, creating a layout that feels significantly larger than its footprint.
The aesthetic approach embraced minimalism, with clean lines, a neutral color palette, and thoughtfully chosen materials that are both durable and easy to maintain. Every design choice was informed by a desire to simplify life without sacrificing warmth or functionality. Low-maintenance flooring, concealed storage, and subtle textural contrasts were used to balance practicality with visual interest. Care was taken to integrate new finishes seamlessly with the existing structural framework, ensuring the old and new coexisted harmoniously.
Before the aesthetic vision could be realized, extensive structural repairs were carried out to address the age and condition of the building. This phase added complexity to the project and required careful planning and coordination to remain within budget. Despite these challenges, the design team maintained a focus on efficiency—both in space planning and cost management.
A key element of the project was the active participation of the clients—a mother and daughter—who were deeply involved in every phase of the renovation. Their collaborative approach helped shape a home that feels deeply personal and tailored to their needs. While the design team handled structural and spatial elements, the clients sourced the loose furniture and accessories themselves, gradually layering in personality and character as the space evolved.
The end result is a home that feels modern yet timeless, minimal yet warm, efficient yet expressive. The redesigned layout successfully merges two separate homes into a single, flowing living space, with the central living room acting as a unifying bridge—both architecturally and emotionally. This project stands as a thoughtful example of how good design can respond to constraints with creativity, resulting in a space that is not only functional and beautiful, but also deeply meaningful.
