Nestled at the edge of the Deccan Plateau in Maharashtra, Pali House is a contemplative architectural response to the harsh climatic conditions, fertile agricultural context, and the timeless rhythms of rural life. Set within a grove of mature chickoo trees, the farmhouse is conceived as a singular, expansive volume that supports both agrarian activity and social gathering, anchored by a single private bedroom.
The spatial layout prioritises openness and versatility—reflecting its role as both a working farmhouse and a place of communal engagement. A soaring roof rises above the treetops, gently tilted to draw in soft, filtered northern light while shielding the interior from the fierce summer heat and monsoon rains. The central space is flanked by a broad north-facing veranda and a narrower southern edge, enclosing a courtyard and reflective water feature—both elements harnessing passive cooling strategies and enabling seamless airflow throughout.
Materiality is central to the house’s ethos. Local basalt forms the foundation and plinth, rising into robust walls that evoke the permanence of regional ruins. These are complemented by rammed earth infill and crowned with a crafted timber superstructure—its frame supporting copper roof tiles, wooden shingles, and shaded decks that blend into the textures of the natural surroundings. Every detail speaks to the artistry of Indian craftsmanship, brought to life by builders and artisans from across the country.
In form and philosophy, Pali House embodies a quiet resilience—rooted in tradition, crafted by hand, and designed to harmonize with its ecological context. It leaves only a light touch on the land, a testament to sustainable architecture and a deep respect for place.
