The refurbishment of this 850 sqft 2BHK apartment, originally built in the late 70s, was designed to be flexible, transforming it into a dynamic 1-2 BHK space that could adapt to the needs of the owner over time. The apartment boasts a unique setting, overlooking a century-old bungalow and a 150-year-old church to the south, with a wild green plot and a striking cannon ball tree to the west—views that were carefully integrated into the design.

The most significant structural change was the removal of all internal walls, except for a brick partition separating the two bathrooms, to run the essential plumbing lines. In place of traditional walls, 16mm thick sheets of affordable marble were used as partitions, creating a refined yet minimalist solution. This choice not only adds elegance but also ensures a sense of openness and light flow throughout the apartment. The marble’s translucency adds a soft, diffused light to the interiors, subtly partitioning spaces while maintaining a visual connection between them.

The living room balcony, offers views of the iconic cannon ball tree, was reclaimed and its adjacency to the main living space, expands the usable area and strengthens the connection between the interior and the surrounding greenery. The second guest bedroom, adjoined to the living room, features a Japanese-inspired wood and marble screen. This screen creates a fluid boundary between spaces, allowing for privacy when needed while still permitting a sense of beyond. The guest room is also granted direct access to the balcony, enhancing its functionality and connection to the outdoor environment.

The powder/guest bathroom was cleverly concealed between wardrobes, integrating it seamlessly into the space and allowing for a clean, minimalist aesthetic. Subtle material play was employed throughout the apartment, particularly in the terrazzo flooring. The terrazzo’s chip size, marble borders, and color variations were carefully chosen to create a harmonious balance with the surrounding materials. Additionally, the pigment used in the terrazzo flooring was extended to color the lime-finished walls and ceilings, tying the entire space together through a cohesive material and color palette.

This refurbishment highlights the careful integration of natural materials, openness, and flexibility, creating a modern and functional living space that respects the historical and natural context of the site. The use of marble and terrazzo, alongside clever spatial planning, transforms the apartment into a serene, adaptable home that captures the charm of its surroundings while offering a contemporary, minimalist aesthetic.
